I Wrote A Book About Recording And Tape Op Reviewed It
Big thanks to John Baccigaluppi for reviewing my book, "On Recording" in Tape Op Magazine issue #159. The book is $10, about 50 pages long and can fit into your pocket. I also recorded the audiobook version on some old Maxell Type II cassette tapes. A real "book on tape"! schlarb.bandcamp.com/album/on-recording-a-manifesto

What Does a Producer Do? In The Studio with Chris Schlarb

The responsibilities of a producer change everyday. Sometimes you are a conductor and confidant. Sometimes an artist and abettor. Ultimately you are responsible for producing something; whether it’s a song or a spirit. I’ve been working at this strange career for a while now and wanted to document what it meant to be a producer on Monday, September 13, 2021. Big thanks to Adriana Schlarb, Junat...

Wow, good job!! Been looking for some benchmarks for how a 4 track oughta sound - you set the bar high.
Any 246 content coming anytime soon?
Gomez's first album 'Bring It On' was largely recorded on a 4 track just like this, when they signed they went to a studio to record the songs and it just didn't work so they went and took the 4 track tapes in and just polished them up a little, some overdubs etc. Their deluxe edition released recently has some of those tracks as mixes straight off the 4 track and they sound just as good as the record. Some genre's just work better on 4 track!
Watching Jim at work! 💙👏👏💙
Gorgeous sound
He traded them to sell them dude, he wasn’t buying them for his own use 😂
Does 224XL have analog gainstage? That would explain difference of headroom on nanoverb, because nano doesn't have it, you go straight to AD with signal.
No comparison. The roland, hands down.
Jim Keltner! ❤🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💙 nobody like him! Bravo!
Any more 246 sessions lately?

My all time favorite tune… great job! Just beautiful!
This reverb is so so nice... I d like to get one but for this i have to sell my rupert neve orbit 5057 sommation device ... Would you tell me that it s a good thing to do ? (i m in home studio +++ with many periph hardware. Thx
That's a tricky question to answer! I have noticed the cost of the Model 200 approaching the cost of the 224XL and 480L and that seems a little silly to me. It's a wonderful unit but only at a certain price. Once you've crossed over $3,000-$4,000 you might as well look into a 224XL or go with the lower cost Lexicon 300 unit - which also sounds fantastic and can still be found for $1,500.
Very cool! One of my favs.
First heard Dave's playing on the first couple of Brian Blade Fellowship albums. Such a beautiful player.
The Roland seem to hold a better balance , the Klark is swirling more , the image isn’t as nice
Beautiful rendition of a beautiful song. And gotta love Jay Bellerose!
I enjoyed the book a lot. It encouraged me more about opportunities as a recording engineer once I’m out of college
Sounds great 👍😎
These are really great demonstrations. Amazing how sweet the sound is even dry. I suppose string quartets and small ensembles are meant to just sound of the room as thats where they originated. Also side note - I notice the masks cut down on the breathing sounds in quieter acoustic instruments.
Very good ... Nice song and thank for the example of your mixing/recording style.
This is an excellent cover. Steel guitar is actually a great way to cover the music of Sonny Sharrock, and I’m shocked others haven’t thought of it before.
Beautiful
Ill be buying the book soon. Congratulations. I'm excited.
Thanks so much! I'm proud of how it turned out!
Okay - Ive never bought a book from watching someone talking about their own book. Until now! Just picked downloaded it and am looking to forward to reading. Btw - is that an EV 635 or PL5?
Ahhhh! Thank you! Yeah! Using an EV 635A. I have two of them. Such incredibly useful mics. Love them on acoustic or electric guitars if you’re just doing overdubs - hard to use in a live tracking situation unless it’s a room mic or bottom snare.
Just got done listening (glad I did the audio version). Lots of great wisdom in your book! I totally identified with your journey . . . From recording with 57’s to working with people at higher levels. PS - I wasn’t paying attention to the noise floor, so sadly I couldn’t tell which was with vs without noise reduction!
Thanks again! I had a great time doing the audiobook version. It’s funny how you can’t really tell about the noise floor unless you try!
Amazing beyond belief beautiful!
The Klark seems cool def, but also seems to have a bit more of a weird phasey sound in some cases, and not in a good way to my ears. Did you sort of feel the same way? I think whats happening also is that the Roland is retaining the mono info much better, whereas the Klark just seems to get way more spread, and seems more modulated, and spread sort of.
Yeah, I wasn't really a fan of the 3rd Dimension. I still have it but don't use it. I think you could probably get closer with the Boss/Roland WazaCraft DC-2W. About the same price as the Klark Teknik unit and much more useable tones and interface!
Lexicon sounds more natural
😅
The issue around these comparisons The owners refuse to acknowledge that the clones sound a lot like the original. Despite your best efforts, your prejudice is evident on your entire countenance!
I still own the Klark Teknik and sold the Roland. I never thought the original Dimension D could justify the prices it was selling for and I'm glad folks are making clones!
For 300-400 man,the Klark is useable and came close to the Roland!
Great magical raw vibe!
Furman Power Conditioner LED Replacement Bulb is not what this video is about
Sounding great Dave, as usual.
Thanks
How did you fit like 8 mics onto 4 tracks?
Submixing! And I think it was six mics into four channels.
Literally the best music ever used for demonstration purposes! loved the video thanks
That last last track is hitting the spot. All sounds excellent
Sounds great. I recently fixed my Tascam 688 and I’m about the track a band live for their EP. After that I’m hoping to do the same with my group. Fun and sounds good. Great job, playing and the sound/ tascam. ❤
Sounds wonderful!! What stereo microphone did you use to capture the drums?
Thanks! I used an AEA R88 stereo ribbon mic on the drums!
Maybe it’s just cuz I really love silent hill, but it’s sounds so Akira YAMAOKA style)))
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻love my 424 forever 📼 no pc is the way🙌🏻
this is cool! i'm Bryce, i record there often. started out with a Ampex MX10 that I basically gutted and built out with better output amps, into a BG1 stereo compressor and Nagra IV-S, that was the first 3 sides of the Jeff Parker record. the 4th side was the new mixer, fully build in a table top chassis with built in stereo buss compressors, but basically the Ampex and BG1 all built in the same package, just with better transformers and the best I could make it. Thats been my set up since then, 4 channels with 2 line inputs but I made a little box with two more of the same channel preamps so it can actually be a six channel. It also has a little side car that gives it 4 more mic channels and two more line inputs. You could have plugged into my snake there and set up back at the other end of the bar like I do, I ran it up in the attic and drops down in the corner.
I think they mentioned you had a snake! It was easy enough for me to just set all my stuff up and run my four cables across the floor - I should have brought a rug though. HA!
was the whole album recorded live within the 4-track k7 machine?
Yes.
Damn man so great Iam about to buy one in very good condition. Now i want it even more
Thanks, enjoyed the great sounds and musicians.
The clone is very neat sounding, hi fi and less ear fatigue to me. The bass roll if could have some uses, eg guitar in a mix or any backline insrrument the engineer will bottom shelf the bass in the mix anyway. This is to get rid of muddyness in the bottom end. Keep it tight down low. A lot of three peice strat players used the original to makexthe trio sound bigger and more muddy so that is a usefull scenario for original. I like the original as i love the way guitar heros used it. I think having both would be nice.
Do you still track through your soundcraft 6000? Also for this session? Sounds amazing!
Thank you! Sold the Soundcraft 6000 many years back to purchase the Audient ASP4816. I do miss that beautiful desk but the Audient is an incredible desk and was a huge step up in term of flexibility and routing.
Hey Chris Love this so much I’ve heard so much about you all from my good friend Mike Watt. He loves you guys . And can’t wait to hear that new mssv record you did last week . Much Respect ✊
Ahhhh! Yeah! Watt's the best. Honored to aid and abet him on so many records over the years. The new mssv record is something else too!
